Quick tips
- Tune the A string first; orchestras and teachers usually give the A.
- Use the fine tuners for small changes and the pegs only when a string is far off. See fine tuners and pegs.
- Bow the open string evenly at a steady, moderate speed. Plucking also works but the note fades quickly.
- Hold the phone or laptop about half a metre from the violin in a quiet room.

Questions and answers
How do I tune my violin online?
Press Start tuner and allow the microphone. Play one open string with the bow and let it sound. The tuner shows the nearest string and how many cents you are off. Use the fine tuner or the peg until the needle is in the centre and it says In tune, then go to the next string.
What are the notes of the violin strings?
From the lowest (thickest) to the highest string: G3 (196.00 Hz), D4 (293.66 Hz), A4 (440.00 Hz), E5 (659.26 Hz). The strings are a fifth apart.
Should I use 440 or 442?
Use 440 unless your teacher, orchestra or the piano you play with uses another pitch. Many orchestras tune slightly higher, often 442. Tap 442 in the tuner and all string targets move up together. See A = 440 or 442.
Is the microphone private?
Yes. The browser only gives the page microphone access after you allow it. The sound is analysed on your own device, nothing is recorded, saved or uploaded, and the microphone switches off when you press Stop or leave the page.
Can I use it for viola or cello?
Yes. Pick Viola or Cello above the gauge. Both are tuned C G D A; the cello sounds one octave lower than the viola. See the viola and cello tuner.
